Foundation Certificate in English for University Study

The Foundation Certificate in English for University Study combines academic English with a range of content modules designed to improve your language skills and help you adapt to studying in British universities and living in the UK. The Foundation Certificate in English provides undergraduates and postgraduates with the necessary skills to allow you to take up your place at university including an optional module on research methodology to introduce you to the skills of carrying out independent project and research work.

In addition to your formal programme we also offer additional language support hours, extra support through e-learning materials as well as a personal tutor system to support you in your studies and the excellent facilities of the University of Central Lancashire and the Department of Languages and International Studies. Each class of students is allocated a Personal Tutor who will assist you in developing and carrying out an independent study plan and tasks throughout the year.

Teaching, learning & Assessment

While on the Foundation Certificate in English for University Study programme you will take the following compulsory modules:
• Academic Skills for Reading and Writing
• Academic Skills for Listening and Speaking
• British Culture and Society
These three modules make up the heart of the programme and provide you with the opportunity to improve your language and study skills. You will attend classes, lectures, tutorials and also do some work through blended e-learning and online tutorials.

You will also have the choice of doing one of the following optional modules
• Business English and Employability Skills
• Introduction to Research Methodology
The Business English programme is intended for those students who wish to go on to study on either English for International Business or on a business-related programme in Lancashire Business School. The course will introduce you to common concepts in business as well as giving you a chance to become familiar with the language of business English.

The Introduction to Research Methodology is intended for students going onto final year or postgraduate studies after the Foundation Certificate programme. The module will explore the issues related to research in British universities as well as giving you practise of skills such as proposing and planning a piece of research.

Entry Requirements

In order to be accepted on the programme you will need to have an overall IELTS grade of 4 or equivalent in another internationally recognised examination. If you do not have such a qualification we can arrange for either testing or an interview.

Course Dates and fees:

The Foundation Certificate in University Study is a two-semester programme starting in either September or January.

The cost of 2 semesters of study is £3995
