You can look forward to an intellectually stimulating experience during your time with us, plus some great social occasions! As far as research is concerned, we also have a lot to shout about: in the last research assessment exercise, the Department was nationally and internationally recognised for its research in European Studies (HEFCE, RAE 2001).

Whatever course you are studying with us, flexibility is the key. You can choose how much of each language you want to study, and it's easy to combine languages with preparation for employment, either on a tailored course or a course you design yourself. You can even combine a language with Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)…a great passport for seeing the world!

Our languages degree courses are generally between three and four years in duration and, after you have completed your studies with us, you can look forward to a bright future: six months after graduation, 95% of our students are either in work or further study.

All Modern Foreign Languages degrees in the Department provide an opportunity to spend time abroad. Some students take up a work placement abroad; others try a study placement, and others still opt for an English language assistantship. It's during the Period Abroad that you get the chance to use your language skills in a very real and practical way. It's also an amazing experience, personally.

Some of our students enjoy the idea of studying so much that they choose to do some postgraduate study with us! We offer a range of courses for postgraduates, from our MA in Teaching English for International Business – both face-to-face and by e-learning - to the possibility of carving out your own research project, via our MA by Research, MPhil or PhD opportunities. We are currently developing even more exciting opportunities for our prospective postgraduates, so watch this space!

This is just the start of the exciting adventure waiting for you in the Department of Languages and International Studies at the University of Central Lancashire. We look forward to working with you over the next few years and sharing some happy times together!
