'Aiming higher with ''Aim Higher''

The Department of Languages and International Studies is continuing to develop its links with the local school and college community. In recent months, Delia Jackson, Senior Lecturer in French and English for International Business, has led a project in the department as part of the Aim Higher initiative.

This is a scheme which targets specific schools in the region in particular subject areas with a view to reinforcing the association between universities and local schools and colleges and encouraging students to proceed on to university in identified subjects. Delia and other colleagues from the Department have targeted students of Modern Languages in various schools, delivering conversation classes in French to Year 9 and 10 students. Some of our native French students at the University have also become involved in this project, and there were lots of smiling faces around as school students practised their French with ‘real’ French people!

We have also invited Modern Languages students from local colleges to the Main University Campus in Preston to enable them to get a feel for the place. Everyone who has taken part in these events – staff and students alike – has found them to be both enjoyable and highly stimulating.
